Rooibos History

Green Rooibos

Green Rooibos was developed in 1995 by the Agricultural Research Council (Infruitec) in South Africa. Although some people think that another plant is used to make Green Rooibos, it is still the same Aspalathus Linearis fynbos plant.  

Only the proces of processing the tea differs.  Natural Rooibos is fermented by adding water to the chopped tea, bruising it and let it oxidize. Unlike the Natural Rooibos, the Green Rooibos is harvested, chopped and then dried immediately.  No fermentation takes place.

Today there are only two Green Rooibos processing plants.
