Rooibos History

1930 cultivation of Rooibos

The cultivation of Rooibos started in 1930 in the Clanwilliam district.  Thanks to the research of dr Le Fras Nortier and the agricultural potential saw by Benjamin Ginsberg, farmers could start cultivate the Aspalathus linearis plant as a commercial crop. Nortier cultivated the first plants at Clanwilliam on the Klein Kliphuis farm.  The tiny seeds were difficult to collect, as they dispersed as soon as the pods cracked, and would not germinate without scarifying. The attempt by Nortier were ultimately successful, which led Ginsberg to encourage local farmers to cultivate the plant in the hope that it would become a profitable tea.
